I Hear the Blues

From the Granada (UK) television program, I Hear the Blues. The show aired December 12, 1963 and featured the likes of Memphis Slim, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, Lonnie Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Victoria Spivey and Matt "Guitar" Murphy. This was quite the assemblage of blues masters on an unprecedented ensemble tour of Europe that included stops in London, Denmark and Paris. I'd wager that this roadshow was a big influence and inspiration for the musicians that manned the soon to explode British Invasion.

The show was produced by Johnnie Hamp, the man who brought the Beatles to TV.

My dad's a guitar player by trade and knows his blues. So one afternoon he was walking down the street in Key West in the 70s and heard someone playing in a bar. He said to himself, "That sounds like Mat Guitar Murphy." He turned around and, sure enough, there was Murphy, sitting on a bar stool in a nearly empty bar, playing away.

Great story.

That would be quite a scene to fall into.
