Why do some people on Ambien eat in their sleep?

From Howstuffworks:

On any given night, people are crawling out of bed and heading for their kitchens with unstoppable cravings. They aren't grabbing the usual late-night fare of pizza or leftover takeout. Instead, they are creating bizarre culinary concoctions like salt sandwiches and buttered cigarettes. What's the deal with these gourmands gone wrong?

It isn't faulty taste buds. It's Ambien.

It seems that others are walking, talking, shopping (!) and even driving while asleep. The thing is, it's hard to find many of them, (especially the ones not driving into phone poles) because they don't remember any of it.

Maybe they could find a way to back-engineer this effect so we can take a pill and work while we sleep.

I went through a sleep-eating period last year, but I wasn't taking anything. Over the course of a few months, my girlfriend and I woke up to several strange things left out in our kitchen, most scary to me was the cup of melted butter.

One or two times I woke up in the middle of it, confused as to why I was standing in the pantry or whatever.

If it starts happening again and you wake up one day and you've gained thirty pounds, you might want to cob up an alarm system in your kitchen! (before you mix some Drano with that hot butter)
