GasBuddy.com has a minutely detailed gas price map of the U.S., updated to 5-15-08. You can even zoom in and view price differences within the municipalities of each county. (This could be useful in finding cheaper gas in your general area.) Right click on the county for the average price.

This makes me sad, as I live in that big red state on the left.
It's all about taxes.
Gas retailers fork over somewhere around 50% of their revenues to the tax man. Some places more, some less.
We do love our taxes. I heard a story on NPR this morning that the actual station owners make between 3 and 12 cents a gallon.
I've heard that the CEOs of the oilcos get 8 cents per gallon.
Can't verify this right now.
